Why is my circuit breaker or RCBO tripping?
Your circuit breaker or RCBO is tripping because it’s doing its job—protecting your electrical system from overloads, short circuits, or faulty appliances. Overloading happens when too many devices draw power on one circuit, exceeding its capacity. Short circuits occur when wires touch improperly, creating a dangerous current surge. Faulty appliances or damaged wiring can also leak current, triggering the RCBO.
What you can try before calling an electrician
- Turn off and unplug all appliances on the affected circuit, this includes all extension leads, power boards and double adaptors.
- Go to your switchboard and reset the tripped circuit breaker or RCBO, if it still trips at this step, do not try and reset multiple times. Call a licensed electrician.
- If breaker of RCBO resets successfully, plug all your appliances back in one by one until the faulty appliance is identified.
